U.S.-U.N. relations topic of lecture

A former United Nations official will be the speaker at the 2005-2006 Kansas University Peace and Conflict Studies lecture.

Gillian Sorensen will talk about “The United Nations and the United States: Controversy and Opportunity,” at 8 p.m. Tuesday in the Kansas Union’s Woodruff Auditorium. The lecture is sponsored by KU’s Humanities and Western Civilization program.

Sorensen is a national advocate on matters related to the U.N. and the U.N. and U.S. relationship. From 1997 to 2003 she was assistant secretary general at the U.N. and was responsible for U.N. outreach to civil society, including non-governmental organizations around the world.

Sorensen was special adviser for public policy to U.N. Secretary Gen. Boutros Boutros-Ghali between 1993 and 1996.

The lecture is free and open to the public.
