Old home town – 40 years ago today

Local residents seeking trees for planting under the new reforestation program were asked to contact the city early. City Manager Ray Wells had instituted the program to help overcome severe losses of American elm trees due to the Dutch elm blight, which ultimately wiped out about a third of the local elm population.

Steve Munzer and Phil Smith were the Kansas University students in line for the coveted Marshall grants.
