Temperatures climbing into the 40s

Early bird Christmas shoppers had to fight more than just crowds this morning — they had to brave a wind chill that dipped into the teens.

“It is very chilly outside,” said Tim Reith, 6News meteorologist. “Make sure if you’re headed out, grab a heavy jacket. You are going to need it. “

At 8:40 a.m., Lawrence’s temperature was 23 degrees, the humidity was 59 percent, and winds were from the south-southeast at 8 mph, making the wind chill 14 degrees. Skies were mostly clear.

Temperatures will be on the rise this morning and will reach a high of 47 by late afternoon, Reith said. Winds will be from the south-southeast at 8 to 15 mph.

“We will see some clouds increasing this afternoon,” Reith said. “But we will see a fair amount of sunshine.”

Overnight, it won’t be quite as cold as it is this morning, Reith said. The temperature will drop to a low of 35 degrees by early Saturday morning.

Kansas University football fans will have good weather to watch KU play Iowa State at home. At Saturday’s 11:30 a.m. kickoff at Memorial Stadium, temperatures will be around 50 degrees, with partly cloudy skies and gusty winds from the south at 15 to 20 mph, Reith said. Saturday’s high will eventually reach 59 degrees, he said.

The clouds that move in Saturday afternoon will also bring a chance of rain, he said.

Sunday’s morning low will be 41 degrees. Temperatures will reach a high of 56 by Sunday afternoon.

Lawrence could see some showers and thundershowers developing Sunday afternoon, Reith said.

“It’s going to cause some major headaches for us, probably late in the day on Sunday,” he said. Lawrence could see a mixed bag of rain and snow by early Monday morning, he said.
