Quiet zone on agenda for traffic commission

November 23, 2005

Lawrence's Traffic Safety Commission will discuss at its December meeting whether a quiet zone should be established in North Lawrence that would prohibit trains from blowing their whistles through the area.

The commission will meet at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 5 at City Hall, Sixth and Massachusetts streets.

Other items on the commission's agenda include:

¢ Requests to establish midblock pedestrian crossings on New Hampshire Street between Sixth Street and Seventh Street and between Eighth Street and Ninth Street.

¢ Request for an all-way stop sign or a traffic signal at the intersection of 10th and Vermont streets.

¢ Request to add traffic-calming devices on 13th Street between Connecticut Street and Haskell Avenue.

The Traffic Safety Commission is an advisory board for the Lawrence City Commission, and none of its decisions take effect unless approved by city commissioners.

With the train accidents in North Lawrence, It seems that whistles should be allowed. Warning at train intercetions is a necessary. People that have livved there for a while get accoustomed to the whistles and dont hear them as they did just after moving there. Sounds have a way of disapearing when you hear them all the time. The brain seems to turn the sound off after a while. The people need to give it some time before they get all heated up and start complaining about them.

Please do not ban train whistles in North lawrence, lives will be lost if you do!

"traffic calming devices! WE DON'T NEED NO STINKIN' DEVICES!"

what're they considering? please do not add these! that's insane!

also, the roundabouts or whatever will play havok with the funeral processions...which you'll have more of if you ban train whistles! ...there ya' go, all in one agenda.

In a hearse, there goes the dearly departed, stuck in a roundabout; round and round he goes; where he'll stop, nobody knows; hell or heaven, will have to wait; because Lawrence thinks it has traffic "woes;" slow that final funerial route.
