Interstate Bakeries to lay off 450 workers

Interstate Bakeries Corp. said Tuesday it would lay off 450 workers as it consolidates operations in three regions across the country.

The bankrupt baker of Wonder Bread and Hostess Twinkies said the closure would eliminate positions of store clerks, salespeople and delivery people in nine states by the end of the year.

This marks the latest cost-cutting measure by Kansas City, Mo.-based Interstate Bakeries, which has shut seven bakeries and cut more than 4,000 jobs since it filed for bankruptcy in September 2004.
