Old home town – 100 years ago today
From the Lawrence Daily World for Nov. 21. 1905: “The university band is putting on finishing touches before its trip to Kansas City to play at the Kansas-Missouri football game later this year and the music sounds very good. : Supt. Charles of the Boys Industrial School at Topeka visited the university today and lectured to the class in social pathology. : Although some want a sea level canal through Panama, others say the only sensible way is to use a lock system. President Roosevelt favors the later plan. : The contract for lighting city streets has been awarded to the Lawrence Electric Light Co., whose bid was $5 a month per lamp for 25 lights to burn all night, and $4 a month per light for 65 lamps to burn until 12:30. The work is to begin immediately and the lighting long has been badly needed. : It is being shown that Douglas County juries will not shy from doing their duty of closing the illegal joints operating here. We need to close all the joints.”
