A night of musical memories

Where were you on Dec. 8, 1980? It has been almost a quarter century since John Lennon was assassinated on the streets of New York. “Dateline” (7 p.m., NBC) spends two hours recalling Lennon’s life and music and looks into unanswered questions about his murder. Lennon, who was only 40 at the time of his death, would have turned 65 this year.

¢ Just in case you haven’t heard enough about the release of the Johnny Cash/June Carter Cash biography “Walk the Line,” CMT rummages through the attic of its Viacom corporate cousins to present “Cash Uncut: A 60 Minutes Special” (7 p.m., CMT), a 1982 Harry Reasoner interview with Cash. He discusses his reputation and public image, and how he sought to balance his “Man In Black” stage persona with his deeply held religious beliefs.

¢ Viewers looking for a country music epic of an older vintage might enjoy “Your Cheatin’ Heart” (7 p.m., TCM), the 1964 biography of Hank Williams starring George Hamilton in the title role. While it may seem difficult to imagine the perennially tan and dapper Hamilton as the doomed honky-tonk balladeer, critic Leonard Maltin praises his performance as “one of Hamilton’s best roles.” Williams Jr. provided the music for Hamilton to lip-synch, and Susan Oliver plays his wife.

“Coal Miner’s Daughter” (9 p.m., TCM) follows. Sissy Spacek won a best actress Oscar for her portrayal of Loretta Lynn in this 1980 musical biography.

¢ How much would you spend to renovate a room? How about nothing? That’s the philosophy of the new series “FreeStyle” (8:30 p.m., HGTV). Host Aaron Foster offers tips on how to recycle stuff you already own to give your space some personal accents. Take that guitar out of the closet and hang it on the wall. Not sitting on that old stool? Use it as a plant stand. Foster contends that less is often more and decluttering can be as creative as recycling. But if you absolutely need stuff, Foster is not above what he calls “scavenging.”
