Temperatures warming into the 50s

After a week that brought strong winds, winter temperatures, rain and even snow, Lawrence gets a break today — sunny skies and temperatures heading into the mid 50s.

“It should be a very pleasant Friday for us,” said Tim Reith, 6News meteorologist. “Temperatures, although cold, are not nearly as chilly as yesterday. . . . Get outside and enjoy it if you can.”

At 8:30 a.m., the temperature was 28 degrees, the humidity was 81 percent and winds were calm.

“Skies are clear and should remain that way for the rest of the day,” he said.

Winds are expected today to switch out of the west, helping temperatures climb back to average into the 50s, he said. Reith said the temperature will climb today to a high of 54 degrees. The average temperature for this date is 53 degrees.

Headed out to watch tonight’s Lawrence High School football game, where the Lions go up against Olathe East in the state 6A semifinal? You should find clear skies with temperatures in the 40s at the 7:30 p.m. kickoff at Haskell Stadium, Reith said.

“It should be a good night for football,” he said.

Clouds will begin arriving late tonight, increasing after midnight, he said. A frontal system will arrive Saturday, bringing another round of breezy conditions, with winds out of the northwest 10-15 mph, gusting to 25 mph, Reith said.

“There’s a slight chance we could see a few sprinkles in the area,” he said.

Saturday’s morning low temperature will drop to 33 degrees. Saturday’s high will be 48.

Sunday’s morning low will be 32 degrees, with the high climbing to 47 by Sunday afternoon.
