Ship to deploy buoys for tsunami warnings
Jakarta, Indonesia ? It’s job is to prevent potential future tragedy.
A German research ship equipped with tsunami early warning buoys sailed Wednesday from Indonesia as part of an international effort organized after last year’s disaster devastated the Indian Ocean rim.
The ship “Sonne,” or “Sun,” left Jakarta and was expected to deploy the buoys by Dec. 26, the one-year anniversary of the earthquake and tsunami that killed or left missing more than 220,000 people in 11 nations.
The full system is expected to be in place by 2008.
