KU students organize Libertarian group

Libertarians are organizing at Kansas University.

A group of students has formed the new club KU Libertarians with the aim of building membership and setting the record straight about what they see as an oft-misunderstood party.

“We get labeled as the people who want to legalize pot,” said Andrew Ward, a sophomore and the group’s first president. “That’s not the whole story.”

Kansas is home to about 9,400 registered Libertarians, according to a 2004 count by the Secretary of State. Six percent live in Douglas County.

The club will help reach out to young people during the college years when many become interested in politics, said Patrick Wilbur, vice chairman of Libertarian Party of Kansas.

Ward said there’s a slew of issues the club can address, including eminent domain, the military draft, the war on drugs and Social Security.
