Alaska-like wind chills wake up Lawrence

Wind chills plunged in Lawrence early this morning — making the city feel more frigid than central Alaska.

While Fairbanks was reporting a brisk 13 degrees this morning, Lawrence’s wind chill about 7:45 a.m. was 12 degrees.

“It’s the coldest morning so far this season,” said Jennifer Schack, 6News meteorologist. “Grab a coat, maybe some gloves and a hat.”

At 8:15 a.m., the temperature had climbed to 24 degrees, the humidity was 68 percent and the winds were from the east-southeast at 7 mph, making the wind chill feel like 16 degrees.

“We’re heading up to 44 degrees for a high temperature today,” Shack said. Skies are expected to be cloudy today, with south winds at 5 to 12 mph, she said.

Overnight, skies will be partly cloudy and temperatures drop down to 26 degrees by early Friday morning. Skies will begin to clear on Friday, as the temperature heads up to 53 degrees by Friday afternoon, she said.

Clouds will return on Saturday, with a very slight chance for a few sprinkles, she said. Saturday’s morning low will be 33 degrees, with the high hitting 50 by Saturday afternoon.
