Cold start to a bright but blustery day

Sub-freezing temperatures and cold breezes were creating wind chills in the teens this morning for Lawrence. And it won’t get much better today — temperatures will stay in the 30s until late afternoon, said Jennifer Schack, 6News meteorologist.

“If you’re going out, grab a coat,” Schack said. “The cold air is diving into the Midwest.”

At 8:15 a.m., Lawrence’s temperature was 28 degrees, the humidity was 56 percent and winds were from the west at 13 mph, creating wind chills in the teens.

“It feels like only 18 degrees. It’s definitely a cold start out there,” Schack said. However, the clouds have passed through the area, leaving clear skies, she said.

“I think we’ll have sunshine in the forecast all day,” Schack said. Temperatures will climb to 36 degrees by noon and to 39 by 4 p.m., she said.

“We’ll be well below average today,” she said. The average high for this date is 53 degrees.

Today’s high will eventually top out at 40 degrees, with winds from the west at 15 to 25 mph, gusting to 30 mph, Schack said.

Overnight, winds will become calm, but the temperature will drop to 17 degrees by early Thursday morning.

“That will be the coldest temperature we’ve seen so far this season,” Schack said.

Thursday’s afternoon temperature will top out at 50 degrees, with winds out of the south at 10 to 15 mph.

“It looks like a cold mid-week and we start to climb by Friday,” Schack said.

Friday’s morning low will be 28 degrees. Friday’s afternoon high will climb to 53 degrees, she said.
