Bookman tests positive

Former Kansas University sprinter Leo Bookman, who’s currently a professional track athlete, tested positive for a banned substance and was given a public warning for his first doping offense by the United States Anti-Doping Agency.

According to the USADA, Bookman tested positive for salbutamol at the Jamaica International Invitational in May. Salbutamol is a prohibited substance, but can be used by an athlete who provides documentation that it is needed for medical purposes. Bookman had no such documentation.

Bookman, 23, was a national champion in the 200 meters during his KU days, which wrapped up in 2004. He also played football for KU in 2001 and 2002. His second-place finish at the Jamaica Invitational in the 200 meters consequently was revoked following the positive test.

Salbutamol, which is often inhaled, is used medically for the treatment of asthma, bronchitis and other breathing disorders.
