Cloudy today, with the chance for some sprinkles

Arctic air moving in overnight

Cloudy skies and temperatures in the 50s are in store for Lawrence today. But overnight a blast of arctic air arrives, bringing colder temperatures, blustery winds, rain — and even a snowflake or two.

“We could see a few flakes of wet snow tomorrow,” said Tim Reith, 6News meteorologist. “No accumulating snow, just the first flakes of the fall season.”

At 8:20 a.m., the temperature was 45 degrees, the humidity was 63 percent and winds were from the east at 7 mph, making the wind chill 41 degrees.

“Grab a jacket. It is just a little bit chilly heading off to work this morning,” Reith said. “It’s very cloudy outside. It’s looking like we’re going to be overcast most of the day.”

A few rain showers were popping up to the west of Lawrence, so it’s not out of the question that Lawrence might see a few sprinkles today, Reith said.

Temperatures will climb this afternoon to the mid 50s, reaching a high of 56 degrees by late afternoon, Reith said. Winds will be from the southeast at 8 to 12 mph.

Overnight, the arctic cold front moves in. It will bring in some rain showers after midnight, about 2 a.m. to 3 a.m., with the possibility of some snow mixed in as the temperatures plunge, he said.

Temperatures will start out Tuesday morning at 47 degrees and then fall to 39 degrees by 4 p.m. Tuesday. Winds will be from the northwest, at 15 to 20 mph, gusting to 35 mph, creating wind chills in the low 30s, he said.

Wednesday’s morning low will be 26 degrees, climbing to a high of 41 degrees by Wednesday afternoon, he said.
