Best Big 12 teams

1997 Nebraska

The ’95 Huskers could be considered the greatest college football team ever, but the Big Eight teams don’t count here. The ’97 Huskers, in coach Tom Osborne’s final year, went 13-0 and earned a split of the national championship with Michigan. The national title is disputed, however, because of an intentional kicked ball that helped lead Nebraska to a miraculous midseason victory over Missouri. The numbers don’t lie, though: NU won the Big 12 title game by 39 points over No. 14 Texas A&M and then beat No. 3 Tennessee, 42-17, in the Orange Bowl. Versus Kansas: Won, 35-0.

2000 Oklahoma

A 13-0 record led Oklahoma to its first national title since 1985. The Josh Heupel-led Sooners weren’t dominant, as they won their last five games by two scores or less. But OU’s 13-2 victory over heavily favored Florida State in the Orange Bowl clinched the undefeated run, the last national title won by a Big 12 school. Versus Kansas: Won, 34-16.

2005 Texas

Barring a late-season collapse, the Longhorns deserve a spot in the conference’s top five teams of all-time. They’ve rolled to a 9-0 record, scoring 40-plus points in eight of those games. With the electric Vince Young at quarterback and talent all across the field, UT is on a collision course with Southern California at the Rose Bowl unless something goes wrong. Versus Kansas: TBD.

1998 Kansas State

The lone team on the list to not win the Big 12. Kansas State rolled through the regular season with an 11-0 record, outscoring conference opponents 342-110. Led by phenomenal dual-threat quarterback Michael Bishop, KSU was a lock for the national-title game if only it could breeze through the conference-title game against Texas A&M. Oops — the Aggies stunned the Wildcats, 36-33, and a deflated KSU squad went on to lose in the Alamo Bowl. Versus Kansas: Won, 54-6.

1999 Nebraska

The Huskers went 12-1 in 1999 and avenged the only loss it had all season. Nebraska went down to Texas and fell, 24-20, on Oct. 23, but came back to beat the No. 12 Longhorns convincingly in the Big 12 title game. The Huskers then went on to beat Tennessee in the Fiesta Bowl, finishing third in the Associated Press poll. Versus Kansas: Won, 24-17.
