Windy Veterans Day ahead

Strong storms possible on Saturday

Thanks to bright but breezy conditions, patriotic flags will be flapping proudly today throughout Lawrence, says Tim Reith, 6News meteorologist.

“Old Red, White and Blue will certainly be whipping in the wind,” Reith said. “As long as you can stand the wind, it looks like any activities for Veteran’s Day are going to be just fine.”

Winds will be from the south at 10 to 15 mph, gusting as high as 25 mph, with temperatures climbing to a high of 73 degrees.

“Grab the jacket this morning and then toss it over your shoulder this afternoon,” he said.

At 8 a.m., the temperature was 42 degrees, the humidity was 71 percent, and skies were mostly sunny. Winds were from the east at 6 mph, making the wind chill 38 degrees.

Temperatures will be climbing into the 60s by noon and into the 70s later in the afternoon, he said.

An increase in clouds will keep temperatures relatively warm overnight. Saturday’s morning low will be 54 degrees, he said. Saturday’s high will be 68 degrees.

Reith said there’s a chance for some showers tonight, with an increasing chance of showers and thunderstorms on Saturday.

“We could see some nasty weather,” he said. “. . . The biggest threat will be large hail and damaging straight-line winds.”

The National Weather Service’s Storm Prediction Center has put the Lawrence area under a “slight risk” of severe weather for Saturday, Reith said.

Reith said Sunday will be dry, with the early morning low temperature starting at 43 degrees and Sunday’s high climbing to 61 degrees.
