Old home town – 40 years ago today

Nine Lawrence High seniors were named finalists for Summerfield and Watkins scholarships at Kansas University. They were Stuart Brune, Jeff Gardner, Tim Gilles, Chris Saricks, William Spray, Richard Whitley, Woody Wright, Kathryn Binns and Virginia Wulfkuhle.

Tentative plans called for a team of four Atomic Energy Commission inspectors to visit a 3,000-acre site near Eudora to check on its feasibility as a location for a $348 million proton accelerator. A number of U.S. sites were being checked and some considered the landing of such a project a major boon for any given area. The Chicago region eventually was chosen.

Former President Dwight Eisenhower’s condition was diagnosed as a “true heart attack” and he was being treated accordingly in Fort Gordon, Ga.
