Scorpions hold off late Terrapin surge to win season-opener

As the third-grade Terrapins scratched their way back into the game, the Scorpions had just enough sting at the end to walk away a the season-opening 22-18 win Saturday at Holcom Park Center.

After forming an early lead, the Scorpions were forced to pick up their play, as the Terrapins were able to get shots to fall in the second half.

“We were able to play really well for our first game of the season. The guys’ effort was great,” said Scorpion assistant coach Steve Siler.

The Scorpions were led early by the play of their big man, Camden Leary. Leary was able to use his size to position below the hoop for rebounds and point-blank scoring opportunities. It was Leary’s touch from close range and from far out that kept the Terrapin defenders guessing.

With Leary’s strong play down low, teammate Charlie Arnold had plenty of room to work from the point. Arnold’s quick first step enabled him to attack the hoop or create opportunities for his teammates. Defensively, Arnold was able to come up with a couple of steals after jumping into the passing lane.

Facing a large deficit, Terrapin guard Zach McAlister led the second-half charge. McAlister’s height gave the Terrapins several second-chance scoring opportunities as McAlister ripped down a handful of offensive rebounds. McAlister’s ability to put the ball on the floor and cut to the hoop led to several open shots as the Terrapins made a late push.

The Terrapins huddle up for a few pointers during halftime Saturday against the Scorpions at Holcom Park Center.

Terrapin point guard Bailey Pattin created problems for the Scorpions with his quick first step and exceptional dribbling abilities. Pattin inched the Terrapins back after a quick steal and a bucket to open the fourth quarter.

However, it was the play of Brenan Occhipinto and Matthew Siler late in the game that secured the win for the Scorpions. With Occhipinto down low and Siler up top, the Terrapins defense was stretched out, leaving the Scorpions with open shots. With the Terrapins trailing by four, Occhipinto floated a sky-hook that closed the game for the Scorpions.

“I thought our passing was what saved us,” said Scorpion head coach Randy Larkin. “We also did a nice job down low picking up the boards. I was really pleased with their effort for the first game of the season.”
