Old home town – 40 years ago today

Arkansas City banker Robert Docking returned to his hometown of Lawrence for a Democratic barbecue and rally. It was obvious to those who attended the event that he would be a candidate for governor in 1966. Docking served four two-year terms as governor, the only person ever to do so in the state.

National Republican chairman Ray Bliss blasted activities of U.S. radical groups and called on the Democrats also to reject such troublemakers of that sort. Local political analysts at Kansas University said they sensed a hint of “McCarthyism” in the remarks.

The Lawrence United Fund campaign total had risen to more than $92,000 and UF president George Ryan said that late efforts could push it past $100,000 by the coming week. The goal was $102,321 and the quest for that amount had been one of the most demanding on record.
