Old home town – 100 years ago today

From the Lawrence Daily World for Nov. 9, 1905: “At a meeting held in Dr. Osborn’s office last Saturday, The People’s State Bank of Baldwin was organized. The plan is to start business no later than the coming Jan. 1. J.P. Bell has been chosen president with Harry Hays vice president. : The Rev. Father McCourt, pastor of the parish here, died last night in a Kansas City, Kan., hospital. He had suffered from Bright’s Disease for about six months. He had been a pastor here for two years. : In the recent riots in St. Petersburg, Russia, the number killed and wounded exceeds 50,000, the majority of them being Jews. Twenty-eight cities have been the scenes of terrible outbreaks and many thousands are homeless. The government such as it is seems to have no control whatever. : The university vesper chorus will meet at the home of Prof. Ashton to begin work on the Christmas program. : A bloodhound has been called in to track a man who threatened a local girl in her back yard the other night. The girl screamed and the man ran and efforts are being made to find him. : The board of education has been conducting a lot of business lately. Local enrollment is 2,286, just about what it was last year but average daily attendance is much better. The board has decided not to allow the Pinckney building to be used any further for church and Sunday school purposes for fear of damage to the building and classrooms. : There is evidence that this year’s KU-Washburn football game may be the last, ending a series that began in 1891. Last year, the local university won 5-0.”
