Garcia leads Celtics to big, season-opening win

The Celtics started the game off fast, played hard as a team in the middle and finished the game with an increased tempo to cruise to an impressive season-opening win.

The fifth- and sixth-grade Celtics beat the Ravens, 34-10, Saturday at Langston Hughes Elementary.

Celtics point guard Jackie Garcia was the court leader for her team. Garcia managed to do just about everything a point guard should do on Saturday, leading the team effort for the win. She threw baseball-style half-court passes to teammates waiting under the basket. Garcia’s passes were converted to points, meaning she racked up notches in the assist column.

Garcia also dribbled circles around the Ravens defense, literally. She brought the ball up court after a missed Ravens shot and headed straight for the corner of the court. Garcia dribbled outside the three-point line next to the baseline and proceeded to dribble all the way along the three-point line to the other side of the court.

Once Garcia got to the other side of the court, she headed down the baseline as if she were going to attempt a lay-up. Instead of shooting the lay-up, she just ran back to her original starting point, picked up her dribble and passed off the ball.

That’s not all that Garcia did in the game, though. She also used her dribbling ability to score points. It was difficult to tell if Garcia is left- or right-handed, as she dribbled with each hand for an equal amount of time. Her versatility made it seemingly easy for her to drive to the basket.

As well as Garcia played, she couldn’t have won the game without her teammates.

Emily Risner, Celtics forward, pulled down boards on both defense and offense. Risner set up Garcia with outlet passes to the wings.

Celtics shooting guard Cassie Fratiello takes a jump shot Saturday at Langston Hughes Elementary.

Celtics shooting guard Joy Brooks was the leader on defense for her team. She created steals with her pressing style of defense and quick hand speed. Brooks wasn’t afraid to get up and down the court herself after stealing the ball. She could spring down the court on the dribble and kick the ball out to a waiting teammate to take a wide-open shot.

Garcia managed to display a terrific individual effort, and with the entire Celtics team supporting her with nonstop defense, they earned their first win of the year.
