Police seek suspect in crime spree

A man suspected in a crime spree that involved several burglaries and vehicle thefts in Jefferson and Leavenworth counties was being sought late Sunday in northern Lawrence.

Police and the Kansas Highway Patrol were investigating a pickup truck that was abandoned near the West Lawrence turnpike interchange. They also were searching for the driver.

The truck was thought to have been taken from a garage at a Jefferson County residence when the suspect drove it through the garage door, Jefferson County Sheriff’s Sgt. George Welch said.

The series of crimes began in Jefferson County where three burglaries were reported by homeowners along with the thefts of at least two vehicles. One vehicle was taken from a grocery store.

The suspect also is thought to have committed a burglary in Leavenworth County.

Some weapons were taken in one of the Jefferson County burglaries, Welch said.

Officers think they know who the suspect is but declined to identify him, Welch said.
