Baldwin comes up short in overtime

? The Baldwin High football team left everything it had on the field in its 13-7 loss to Chanute on Saturday night in the Class 4A playoffs – including tears.

Despite scoring with only a minute to play and stuffing Chanute at the goal line in the final seconds, the Bulldogs ended their season – with an interception.

“We worked as hard as we could to come back and score on them,” said senior Aaron Hannon, who was at the receiving end of a 28-yard touchdown pass from senior Jeremy Wright that sent the game to overtime. “We were ready to go in overtime, and we just couldn’t pull it out, and it hurt worse.”

Though the interception may be the most remembered play of their season, the goal-line stop defined the play of this Bulldogs’ team.

The BHS defense gave up 323 yards against a faster and more aggressive Chanute team, but never let the Blue Comets get out of striking distance.

After a big sack late in the fourth quarter, Chanute (10-1) was forced to punt. But the Baldwin special teams had something to say about that, driving the punter to the field after a bad snap.

The ensuing offensive drive resulted in the game-tying touchdown.

It was no easy task for the offense, however, as the Bulldogs (9-2) were forced to convert two fourth downs, including the play that resulted in the touchdown.

But the most difficult thing to swallow for senior Klay Garrison – who led the Bulldogs in rushing with 79 yards – was that his high school football career had ended.

“Right now,” said Garrison, asked when it would hit that his career had ended. “Watching all my friends walking off, knowing it’s the last time.”

Baldwin coach Mike Berg said this year’s senior class was one of the most special in his coaching career.

“I’ve had great senior classes every year I’ve been here, and this is up there right with them all, just because they work so hard,” Berg said. “We have never had a class work as hard and be as determined as this group.

“And they’re hurting tonight – and when they’re hurting, they know that they put everything they had into it.”

Wright was one of those seniors hurting the most, as it was his pass that was intercepted and ended the season.

“We played as a family the whole year,” said Wright, who did not start at quarterback, but eventually took over for Blake Wieden. “This is probably the closest team I’ve ever been on, and I just love the guys we play with. And our senior group – we’ve played together forever, and it’s hard to see it end.”
