Douglas County Family and Community Education in cooperation with K-State Research & Extension Family and Consumer Sciences is offering the program “Growing Stronger” at 9:30 a.m. Friday in the Deal Six Auditorium at the Douglas County 4-H Fairgrounds, 2110 Harper St. The program will be presented by Susan Krumm, an Extension agent in family and consumer sciences with K-State Research and Extension-Douglas County.
She will present a strength-training program that was developed by experts at Tufts University and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
“Growing Stronger” is an exercise program based on scientific reserach involving strengthening exercises.
To register, call the Extension Office at 843-7058. The program is open to the public.
¢ Kanwaka Family and Community Education unit will meet at noon Tuesday at the home of Muriel Maness. Aliene Bieber will present the lesson “Sauce It Up.”
¢ India Family and Community Education unit will meet at 1:15 p.m. Thursday at the home of Beulah Anderson. Co-hostess will be Emma Garrett. Darlene Bright will give the lesson “Searching for Chocolate.” Members are urged to bring teddy bears.
¢ The Stull Busy Beavers 4-H Club met Oct. 10 at Stull United Methodist Church. The meeting was called to order by Adam Lesser, president. Members answered roll call by naming their teachers. Club members decided to bake 20 pies for the Clinton Presbyterian Church turkey supper on Nov. 8 at the church. The club also decided to have a hayrack ride Oct. 29 at the Schumann’s home to celebrate the ending of a successful 4-H year.
The achievement committee recognized 4-H’ers who received purple ribbons. It also talked about the past 4-H year and gave a video slide show of the club’s 4-H’ers and their projects through the year.
Members were reminded that 4-H Sunday would be recognized Oct. 30 at Stull United Methodist Church.
The next meeting will be at 6:30 p.m. Nov. 14 at the church. It will be Parents Night and the meeting will start with a potluck dinner. Members are to bring a meat dish and side item. The club will provide table service.
¢ The Four Leaf Clover 4-H Club met Oct. 10. The meeting was called to order by Jessica Gibler, president. Jen Livingood read the minutes of the last meeting. The officers gave their reports.
Members discussed collecting food for Lawrence food pantries, the County Achievement Celebration and Adopt-a-Family program.
The next meeting will be Nov. 14.
¢ The Lone Star 4-H Club installed new officers during its October meeting. Community leaders Mary Berg and David Metsker installed the following officers: Libby Queen, president; John Berg, vice president; Leslie Queen, secretary; Callie Fishburn, treasurer; Haley Parker, reporter; Christine Caffey, parliamentarian; Tyler Kapelle and Justin Narcomey, historians; Alison Melser, recreation leader; John Berg and Christine Caffey, song leaders; and Callie Fishburn and Grant Metsker, council representatives.
The club received thank-you notes for assistance given to those who were affected by Hurricane Katrina. The club will participate in the Adopt-a-Family program for Thanksgiving and Christmas. Kimbreley Davis, 4-H youth development agent, led the club in a game of 4-H Jeopardy. The County Achievement Celebration will be Sunday, and the Club Achievement Celebration will be Nov. 14, the next monthly meeting.
¢ Wesley Callahan, president, called the Oct. 5 meeting of the Palmyra 4-H Club to order. Roll call was a candy toss read by Jamie Goff, secretary.
The 2005-2006 officers were installed. They are: Emily Krysztof, president; Jennifer Goff, vice president; Brianna Krysztof, secretary; and Jamie Goff, treasurer. Council representatives are Wesley Callahan and Kaleb Horne.
Michaela Krysztof and Ramie Burkhart led the club in singing “Scarin’ Alive.” Colton Horne gave a current events report on 4-H Week. Emily Krysztof talked about the whooping cough and gave safety tips on ways to stay healthy during the cold season. Katie Pattrick and Kaitlyn Christie led the club in a game of Mummy Wrap.
Club members volunteered to help during the Douglas County Farm Tours at Hamill’s Country Garden Nursery. They will be raking leaves for the Ives Chapel Methodist Church in Baldwin.
The club will have an achievement celebration Nov. 12 at the home of Tim and Angie Horne.
¢ The Clinton Eagles 4-H Club met Oct. 3 at Wakarusa Valley School. The meeting was called to order by Kahlynn Heine. Katie Gaston called roll, and members answered by naming their favorite sports team. Lindsey Fangman and Kasey Waite led the group in singing “Row, Row, Row Your Boat.” Katie Gaston read the minutes from the September meeting.
Kirstyn Heine gave the treasurer’s report. Simon Fangman gave the reporter’s report. Morgan Mangor gave a historian report. Donald Baldwin gave the county council report about cookbooks. Lanaea Heine gave the leader report. She announced enrollment forms were due in November.
The club installed new officers. Emory Hubble gave a project talk on poultry judging at the fair.
Denise Snodgrass announced the club achievement celebration will be during the November meeting.
