MacDougal named Royals' top pitcher for 2005

? Kansas City Royals first baseman Mike Sweeney, who led his team in hitting, doubles and home runs this season despite missing 40 games due to injury, has been named the Royals’ player of the year for the third time.

Sweeney’s selection by the local chapter of the Baseball Writers Association of America was announced Wednesday, along with that of Mike MacDougal as the team’s top pitcher.

Sweeney, 32, hit .300, with 39 doubles and 21 homers. It was the sixth time in the last seven seasons that he has had 20 or more home runs. He ranks third on the team’s all-time list with 182, behind George Brett’s 317 and Amos Otis’ 193.

MacDougal, 28, a right-handed relief pitcher, was 5-6 with 21 saves in 25 chances and an earned-run average of 3.33. At one point, he had 15 consecutive saves. Saves for his career with Kansas City total 49.
