Hurricanes outlast Cougars for championship

Belaire and Cougars give Hurricanes tough test for Toy Bowl title

The second- and third-grade Hurricanes and the fourth- and fifth-grade Hurricanes had already won their Toy Bowl championships when the sixth-grade Hurricanes took the field hoping to make it a clean sweep.

The oldest team in the Hurricane program did just that, defeating the rival Cougars, 25-18, in Sunday’s championship game at Youth Sports Inc. fields.

“It’s kind of a chess match because we’ve been playing against them for a long time, and sometimes they know what we’re thinking and we think we know what they’re thinking,” said Hurricane coach Bret Toelkes said.

But the game certainly didn’t start off as a chess match, as the Cougars drove all the way down the field to the Hurricane 11-yard line before things got sloppy.

The Cougars had a first-and-10 at the 11 but were called for three consecutive penalties, which set up a first-and-40.

The Hurricanes were ready when the Cougars went to the air in order to pick up such a large chuck of yardage, and linebacker Jermel Fleming jumped in front of the Cougar pass and took the ball back the other way for an 80-yard touchdown.

But the Cougars didn’t waste much time matching the Hurricanes with a score of their own.

Running back Jeffrey Belaire started the drive with a run to the right, broke through the Hurricanes defensive line and sprinted down the sideline for a 75-yard score to tie the game at six-all.

The two teams traded big second-quarter touchdown runs of 50 yards as both Hurricanes running back Caleb Bowen and Belaire scored to leave the game tied at 12 headed into halftime.

The third-quarter followed suit like the second as both teams traded touchdowns. However, the Hurricanes were able to convert on their extra point while the Cougars came up just short leaving the score at 19-18 going into the last quarter of the season.

The Hurricanes extended their lead when Bowen broke off a 20-yard run on the first play of the quarter for a touchdown. But Cougars lineman Jerome Miller came up big when he tackled Fleming at the one-yard line to prevent the Hurricanes from going up by eight points.

The Cougars started their ensuing drive with decent field position at the 50, but Belaire fumbled the ball when he was hit from behind and the Hurricanes recovered the loose football.

The Cougars’ defense responded and gave the ball back to its offense with 3:46 left in the game.

Cougars All-Purpose player Jeffrey Belaire takes the snapp under center during the third quarter of the sixth-grade championship game Sunday at Youth Sports Inc. The Cougars had a chance to win the game late, but the Hurricanes recovered a Belaire fumble which preserved their seven-point lead for the title the Hurricanes' sweep of all three Toy Bowl championship contests.

Belaire took over at quarterback and threw a 15-yard pass to Rydell Blann. After two rushing plays, the Cougars championship dreams rested on a third-and-five.

Belaire took the handoff and ran 10 yards to the right, easily picking up the first down yardage. But as Belaire was falling down a Hurricane defender stripped the ball from him and Jamisone Montes de Oca recovered the ball for the Hurricanes – who easily ran out the remainder of the clock for the victory.

“It was a good game and nobody got hurt, which is always a positive,” Toelkes said. “The weather was perfect. You just absolutely couldn’t ask for anything better.”
