‘Canes complete perfect football season

A perfect season became a reality for the second- and third-grade Hurricanes Sunday when they defeated the Gorillas, 37-14, in the Toy Bowl at Youth Sports Inc.

The Hurricanes used their power running game to perfection, and their defense smothered the Gorilla offense – holding them scoreless for three quarters.

“This is the best team I have ever coached, and I’ve coached soccer, basketball and baseball,” Hurricane coach Sebastian Bonner said, in his celebration speech to his team after the game.

Much like during the regular season, the Hurricanes were able to get on the board early with their quick-hit running game.

After holding the Gorillas to a punt on the game’s opening possession, Hurricane running back Anthony Bonner flashed 65 yards downfield on his team’s first offensive play to score the game’s first touchdown.

The Hurricanes’ defense added to its advantage on the Gorillas next drive, when linebacker Weston Hack picked up a fumble and went 90 yards untouched for a momentum-building touchdown.

“Our defense played excellent today,” Bonner said. “We were able to disrupt the Gorillas’ timing and hold them scoreless for three quarters.”

The Gorillas were forced to go for it on fourth-and-9, but the hard-hitting Hack again came up big with tackle for a loss and a turnover on downs.

Bonner once again struck on the first play of the possession, cutting through the Gorilla defense on his way to a 35-yard touchdown run.

Gorilla Braxton Olson looks to recover a loose ball as the rest of his teammates and Hurricanes rush to catch up Sunday during the second- and third-grade championship game.

After returning a fumble for a touchdown and forcing another turnover on downs, Hack took control of the offense as quarterback.

Hack attacked through the air and used his speed to scramble out of trouble. Hack often looked to his security blanket, wide receiver Andrew Keating, keeping the Gorilla defense guessing.

Hack – who was able to run on the ground, while also utilizing Keating – secured the win for the Hurricanes when he eluded a handful of Gorilla defenders and raced 30 yards for his teams’ final touchdown.

“I had three main goals for this team all year: I wanted them to block, tackle and run hard. That was my guiding philosophy for this team all year in order to have a championship season, and they were fantastic in each,” Bonner said.
