Vidro could be back after All-Star break

Washington – Washington Nationals second baseman Jose Vidro’s left ankle injury probably will sideline him until after the All-Star break.

Vidro, on the disabled list since May 9 because of a partially torn tendon on the outside of the ankle, will need to wear a walking boot for about two more weeks, team doctor Bruce Thomas said Monday.

“He’s really coming along. His strength and his motion are better,” Thomas said. “Reasonably, the All-Star break is what we’re shooting for.”

Rockies re-call No. 1 pick

Denver – The Colorado Rockies called up reliever Matt Anderson from Triple-A on Monday, bringing the overall No. 1 pick of the 1997 draft back into the major leagues. The Rockies placed reliever Jose Acevedo on the 15-day disabled list because of a strained right groin.

Wright starts throwing

Tampa, Fla. – Yankees pitcher Jaret Wright played catch Monday in his first throwing session since hurting his right shoulder. Wright was placed on the 15-day disabled list April 24, one day after leaving his start against the Texas Rangers because of pain in his shoulder.

Angels sign Weaver to minor-league pact

Anaheim, Calif. – The Los Angeles Angels signed top draft pick Jered Weaver to a minor-league contract Monday night after months of failed negotiations.

The sides had until 9 p.m. Monday to reach an agreement or the right-hander would have re-entered the amateur draft. The Angels drafted the 6-foot-7 Weaver with the 12th overall pick last June after several teams opted to pass on him because of the fear that Weaver’s agent, Scott Boras, wanted too much money.
