KU code of conduct forbids fighting

Kansas University’s student-athlete code of conduct stipulates that “fights started by or involving student athletes” will not be tolerated.

The section titled Physical Assault/Abuse reads: “These acts degrade our Athletic Department, campus, community and society in general. While the University cannot control all factors in society that lead to physical assault/abuse, the University strives to create an environment that is free of violence.”

Department policies give the athletic director the authority to investigate a student-athlete’s conduct “upon receipt of information that gives rise to reasonable suspicion that” the code has been violated.

As yet, KU athletic director Lew Perkins has not ordered such an investigation.

“We’re still in the information-gathering stage,” said Chris Theisen, assistant athletic director in charge of media relations. “Once the police report comes out, those issues will be addressed.”
