Holdsclaw propels L.A., 84-75

? Chamique Holdsclaw had 27 points and 10 rebounds, and the Los Angeles Sparks overcame a WNBA-record 15 three-pointers by Washington, beating the Mystics, 84-75, Thursday night.

Tamika Whitmore also scored 21 points for the Sparks, who took the lead for good on two free throws by Christi Thomas with 5:22 left.

Los Angeles beat the previous league record of 14 three-pointers set in 1999 by Minnesota at Utah and matched by Sacramento, against Minnesota, in 2001.

Charlotte Smith-Taylor led the Mystics with a season-high 17 points, including four three-pointers. Chasity Melvin added a season-high 16 points, and Kansas State product Laurie Koehn had 15 for Washington.

Smith-Taylor made back-to-back three-pointers to get the Mystics within 72-71 with 3:03 left, but that was as close as Washington got down the stretch.

Holdsclaw, playing against her former team, scored her 3,000th career point. She made six free throws, and Whitmore added four points as the Sparks closed out the victory with a 12-4 run.

Fever 67, Liberty 59

New York – Kelly Miller had 19 points to lead Indiana over New York, improving to 3-0 for the first time in franchise history. Deanna Jackson added 10 points for Indiana, which outrebounded New York 32-22. Ann Wauters and Crystal Robinson scored 15 points apiece for the Liberty, who dropped to 0-2 for only the third time.

Mercury 68, Sting 58

Charlotte, N.C. – Anna DeForge scored 20 points, and Diana Taurasi added 19 Thursday night to lead Phoenix over Charlotte for its first victory of the season.
