Jayhawks’ season ends

Georgia Tech pounces early in 5-2 victory

? Georgia Tech’s early surge left too big a hole for the Kansas University softball team to dig out of Saturday.

The Yellow Jackets beat the Jayhawks, 5-2, Saturday at UGA Softball Stadium to advance to the NCAA Tournament regional final today against host Georgia, scoring all five of their runs in the first three innings.

Kansas, after beating Tennessee Tech, 4-0, earlier Saturday to keep its season alive, finished the year 31-24.

Kansas starter Christina Ross was hit for five runs in 22/3 innings, but all three Tech runs plated in the third inning were unearned after a two-out error prolonged the frame.

Kassie Humphreys relieved Ross, pitching 31/3 perfect innings to stop the bleeding.

The Jayhawks made a late comeback, scoring two on a home run by Jessica Moppin in the sixth inning, but the deficit was too large.

Moppin’s blast was the 24th of her career, breaking KU’s all-time career home run record. The previous mark of 23 was held by Leah Tabb and Shannon Stanwix.
