Not all politics

To the editor:

Recently, I made an appointment with our state representative, The Hon. Dennis Moore, at his office in Washington, D.C. I was seeking his support on an issue important to my family. I knew Rep. Moore did not agree with my position, so I assumed he would politely listen, shake my hand and show me out the door. I was mistaken.

Not only was Rep. Moore fully aware of the issue, he took time to explain why he disagreed, and we debated the alternatives. He was respectful of my opinion and did not dismiss me just because I disagreed with him. This letter is for those who believe congressmen don’t listen. Well, Dennis Moore does.

When my 15 minutes were up, he didn’t show me to the door. He spent an additional 30 minutes discussing many other issues such as the Social Security Truth in Budgeting Act he introduced to remove Social Security funds from the federal budget so the funds are not spent on new tax cuts. We discussed outsourcing and layoffs at the company where I work. He showed me “The Meds Act,” a bill he introduced authorizing the government to negotiate with drug companies for lower prices for Medicare recipients.

In this time of divisive politics, we tend to think of Congress as black and white, red or blue. That’s not Rep. Moore. He listens to his constituents and sincerely works on their behalf, not his political party’s.
