How to remove splinters

Splinters are a hazard of warm weather, whether you pick them up romping in the woods or doing household chores. Here are some tips for dealing with them, according to HGTV.com:

¢ Try removing them by using a piece of adhesive tape. Place it gently over the sliver and lift up. If this doesn’t work, try numbing the area with an ice cube and removing the splinter with a pair of tweezers and a sterilized needle. You’ll want to produce a bit of blood flow from the wound to wash out any remnants of the splinter.

¢ Automatic pencil-lead cartridges work great for storing needles used to assist in the extraction of splinters. Make sure you sterilize the container before you use it.

¢ Iodine is handy to help locate small splinters. Apply iodine to the area, then wipe it off. The splinter will darken in color, and you’ll be able to remove it with minimal “poking.” A magnifying glass also will help.

¢ Never use your teeth or mouth as a tool. Your mouth has bacteria in it that will infect the wound.
