Rangers unload on Astros

Texas hammers eight home runs during 18-3 rout

? David Dellucci led off a record-setting game for the Texas Rangers with – what else – a home run.

Mark Teixeira hit a three-run shot to highlight a club-record, four-homer second inning, and Dellucci had two of the Rangers’ team-high eight home runs in an 18-3 rout of the Houston Astros on Saturday.

“Eight-homer games don’t happen very often,” said Dellucci, who went 3-for-4. “We got a fast start, and they were just coming in bunches. Hopefully, we saved a few for tomorrow and down the road.”

Rod Barajas, Hank Blalock and Laynce Nix connected in the second, and Richard Hidalgo and Kevin Mench also homered to help the Rangers top their previous best of seven, accomplished in 1986 and 2003.

All four second-inning homers and the Rangers’ eight runs – Texas’ season high for runs in an inning – came with two outs.

Barajas homered first off Astros rookie Ezequiel Astacio (0-3), beginning a streak of eight straight Rangers to reach base. Walks to Dellucci and Michael Young set up Teixeira’s ninth homer.

“We’ve done it in the past and we broke out today,” Teixeira said. “It’s good for our confidence to put a lot of runs on the board. We had some good at-bats today. We started hot and built from there. It was contagious.”

Blalock, who went 4-for-5 and drove in four runs, followed with his seventh homer, and Mench had an RBI double to knock out Astacio. Nix added a solo shot off reliever Chad Harville to extend the Rangers’ lead to 10-0.

Texas had 25 three-homer innings before breaking the mark Saturday.

The major-league record for home runs in an inning is five, accomplished by three teams in the National League and by Minnesota in the AL. The Twins were the last to equal the mark, on June 9, 1966, against Kansas City in the seventh inning.

Mets 7, Yankees 1

New York – Jose Reyes drove in four runs, and the New York Mets roughed up Randy Johnson for 12 hits Saturday in a victory over the Yankees to even the Subway Series at a game apiece.

Kris Benson (2-1) threw six-plus shutout innings, Miguel Cairo homered, and David Wright had a pair of RBI doubles for the Mets.

Left-handed relief pitcher Dae-Sung Koo led off the seventh with a long double to center off Johnson, then scored from second on a bunt when the Yankees forgot to cover home. Johnson (4-3) gave up four runs over 62â3 innings for the Yankees.

Angels 3, Dodgers 1

Los Angeles – Chone Figgins drove in the go-ahead run with an eighth-inning double, and the Angels won for the fifth time in six games. The Angels won at Dodger Stadium without outfielder Vladimir Guerrero, the reigning AL MVP who will be sidelined at least two weeks because of a partial dislocation of his left shoulder.

Figgins lined a pitch from Giovanni Carrara (4-1) down the first-base line with one out, scoring Dallas McPherson from second. After two walks, Steve Finley drove in Figgins with an RBI single.

Brendan Donnelly (2-0) recorded two outs for the win.

Blue Jays 7, Nationals 0

Toronto – Roy Halladay pitched seven scoreless innings, and Eric Hinske hit a two-run homer for Toronto. Halladay (7-2) allowed four hits and lowered his earned-run average to 2.84. The 2003 Cy Young Award winner struck out two and walked two for his sixth win in eight starts.

He won just eight games last year after a troublesome right shoulder limited him to 21 starts. Hinske homered off Tony Armas (1-2) in the sixth, giving Toronto a 6-0 lead. Orlando Hudson went 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored for the Blue Jays.

Marlins 4, Devil Rays 3

Miami – Pinch-hitter Joe Dillon hit his first major-league home run in the bottom of the eighth inning, and Florida overcame a three-run deficit. Dillon hit a pitch from Devil Rays reliever Jesus Colome (1-2) over the left-field wall to break a 3-all tie. Matt Perisho (2-0) recorded two outs in the eighth for the win.

Braves 7, Red Sox 5

Boston – Kyle Davies overcame the Red Sox and the rain in a scoreless major-league pitching debut, and Atlanta defeated Boston. Davies allowed four hits in five innings and left with a 7-0 lead before Boston scored against the Braves’ bullpen. The Red Sox made four errors – two by shortstop Edgar Renteria.

Giants 3, Athletics 2

San Francisco – Ray Durham singled, doubled and hit a sacrifice fly to extend his club-best hitting streak to 12 games, and San Francisco defeated Oakland. Jeff Fassero pitched six strong innings in his third start after beginning the year in the bullpen, helping the Giants to just their second victory in seven games.

Tigers 3, Diamondbacks 2 (11)

Detroit – Marcus Thames’ hit with the bases-loaded over a drawn-in outfield completed a two-run rally in the 11th inning and gave Detroit a victory over Arizona. Rondell White’s double down the right-field line scored Ivan Rodriguez to tie it at 2 with one out. Rodriguez led off with a double and moved to third on a groundout. Dmitri Young was then walked intentionally, and Brian Bruney (0-2) walked Craig Monroe. Thames then lined a pitch deep into left-center field to score White.

Orioles 7, Phillies 0

Baltimore – Erik Bedard pitched five-hit ball for seven innings to win his fifth consecutive decision, and Baltimore averted its first three-game losing streak of the season.

White Sox 5, Cubs 3

Chicago – Paul Konerko broke up a no-hit bid in the sixth, then delivered a go-ahead, two-run single in the eighth as the White Sox rallied to beat the Cubs.

After Carlos Zambrano shut out the White Sox on one hit in seven innings – Konerko’s soft single with two outs in the sixth – the team from Chicago’s South Side showed again why it has been the best squad in baseball.

The White Sox put together a four-run rally in the eighth featuring speed and timely hitting to take a 4-1 lead and then held on for their second straight win in the spirited interleague series.

Brewers 6, Twins 0

Minneapolis – Doug Davis threw a seven-hitter, Carlos Lee drove in four runs to wake up Milwaukee’s offense, and the Brewers beat Minnesota. This was the second career shutout and first in more than three years for Davis.

Mariners 5, Padres 3

Seattle – Adrian Beltre and Richie Sexson homered on consecutive pitches, helping Seattle snap San Diego’s eight-game winning streak. Beltre sent a 1-1 pitch airborne leading off the sixth. Sexson – who also hit a two-RBI double – connected on the next pitch.

Indians 5, Reds 3

Cincinnati – Left-hander C.C. Sabathia pitched six innings and put a spark in Cleveland’s listless offense, hitting his first career home run in a victory over Cincinnati. Sabathia’s two-run shot off Elizardo Ramirez (0-2) put the Indians ahead to stay in the fourth.
