Pirates keep Rockies reeling on road

? Seeing the Pittsburgh Pirates score more than a handful of runs was so comforting to pitcher Mark Redman and manager Lloyd McClendon, they almost relaxed. Almost.

Rob Mackowiak hit a three-run homer to back Redman’s latest strong start, and the Pirates extended Colorado’s season-long road miseries, bouncing back from two straight last-inning losses to win, 9-4, Friday night.

Matt Lawton, previously in a 4-for-36 slump, added a solo homer and a two-run single in a six-run seventh inning against Rockies starter Jamey Wright (2-4) and reliever Byung-Hyun Kim, with Kim giving up five runs and five hits.

“It seems like he does that each time I tell him he needs a day off,” McClendon said of Lawton, who has started every game. “He hasn’t even gotten going yet, but he’s been very steady.”

After having each of their previous five games decided by two runs or fewer, the Pirates broke out with their second-highest output of the season. They scored more than six runs for only the fourth time in 39 games.

“We’ve been waiting for a game like this for quite some time now,” McClendon said. “I almost relaxed for 30 seconds there. You like to have some nice, easy wins.”

The Pirates won their 10th in 15 games but just their sixth in 18 home games in a matchup of the teams with the NL’s fewest wins at home and on the road. The Rockies are a major-league-worst 2-16 away from Coors Field.

Pittsburgh closer Jose Mesa lost ninth-inning leads in each of the Pirates’ previous two home games, one-run losses Tuesday and Wednesday to the Cubs.

Redman (3-3) was denied his third consecutive complete game, but limited the Rockies to two runs and four hits in 61â3 innings.
