Judge orders competency test for suspect in pilot shooting case

? A man who allegedly fled from authorities before shooting and wounding a pilot searching for him will undergo a competency exam to see if he is fit to stand trial.

A judge postponed a preliminary hearing scheduled Wednesday for Michael Michaud, 28, of Clay Center, and ordered a competency exam.

In late April, Michaud allegedly fled from officers near Clay Center who tried to pull his pickup truck over for illegal registration. When Michaud escaped officers on the ground, Clay County commissioner Mike Spicer and a friend were asked to use a plane to help with the search.

Authorities said when Spicer spotted Michaud in a field, Michaud fired a handgun several hundred feet in the air and wounded Spicer in the forehead.

Spicer, 55, landed the plane safely and went to a hospital. Michaud was apprehended the next day.

Michaud is charged with two counts of attempted murder, criminal discharge of a weapon at an occupied vehicle resulting in bodily harm, criminal possession of a firearm and attempting to elude an officer.

A Clay County District Court spokeswoman said a new preliminary hearing date had not been set. Michaud is in jail on $1 million bond.
