Big 12 Conference track coaches have named Kansas University’s Stanley Redwine men’s outdoor coach of the year.

Also, KU’s Sheldon Battle was named male outdoor performer of the year, and the Jayhawks’ Ekaterina Sultanova was named female outdoor freshman performer of the year.

Redwine, in his fifth season as KU’s head coach, led the men’s team and women’s team to fourth- and sixth-place finishes, which ties the KU men’s (2002) and women’s (2003) highest league finishes. Gary Pepin of Nebraska was named women’s coach of the year.

Battle tallied 28 points at the Big 12 Outdoor after claiming gold in the discus (188-10) and hammer throw (210-00) and finishing second in the shot put (63-101/2).

Battle, a junior-college transfer from Jamestown, N.Y., is the second KU male thrower to sweep both the high-point award and performer-of-the-year honors in the same season. Scott Russell did it in 1999 and 2002.

Sultanova won the Big 12 Outdoor women’s pole vault at 13-51/4, tying a league meet record.
