Lawrence area under severe thunderstorm watch

If you’re headed out to stand in line today for the new Star Wars movie, you might want to pack an umbrella along with your light saber.

“We do have a chance for thunderstorms this afternoon and evening,” said Jennifer Schack, 6News meteorologist.

The Lawrence area, including Douglas, Franklin, Jefferson and Shawnee counties, are currently under a severe thunderstorm watch through 10 p.m., according to the National Weather Service.

The main threat from any storms will be large hail, Schack said.

The chances for storms end late tonight. Overnight, the temperature will drop to 61 by Thursday morning. Thursday high 89 with west winjds 5-12 mph.

Friday’s skies will be partly cloudy, with the low starting out at 63, climbing to a high of 79 by Friday afternoon.

“We keep the forecast dry Saturday through Monday,” Schack said.
