Long Road Home

By Drew DeBiasse

“Take the long road home,” said He,

“And ne’er gaze back.

The dust hast yet to settle,

But tomorrow forever looks to the fore.

Take the long road home,” said He,

“And be not afraid to sing your sorrowful song.

New winds are winding nearer,

Carrying a tender tune.

Take the long road home,” said He,

“Home is within your reach,

For dawn is deviously dying,

And demanding another goodbye.”

Jailor of Paul and Silas (Acts 16:23-30)

By Jenny Felts

Attacked by the mob

And brutally beaten,

They are given to me to contain.

Their aspiration to pervade the Word in all the land

Deserves not the label of crime.

Midnight:

I hear their voices slicing the silence

With hymns and praise,

A harbinger.

Punished and imprisoned, why do they praise?

With the sudden, violent quaking of the earth,

All prisoners are liberated.

Fraught with fear,

I draw my sword on myself,

For my duty has fallen short,

But I am stopped

As the prisoner reveals their presence.

Dashing to them

Like a lost child catching a glimpse of home,

I fall, trembling at their feet,

Desiring to atone for my sins,

Desiring to be saved.
