Eudora survives Tongie

? Eudora High’s baseball team trimmed Tonganoxie, 4-3, on Monday in a first-round Class 4A regional game at CommunityAmerica Ballpark.

Eudora high third baseman Paul Smith races to the base as Tonganoxie's Kelton Starcher, left, tries to advance. The Cardinals won their Class 4A regional baseball game, 4-3, Monday at the Kansas City T-Bones' Community-America Ballpark in Kansas City, Kan.

Mark Abel’s triple in the second inning plated Joe Kaup and Miles Cleveland, giving No. 1 seed Eudora its margin of victory.

The other two Cardinal runs scored in the first on a Chad Griffin RBI single and Paul Smith sacrifice fly.

Jacob Herrstrom had a two-run single in the third for eighth-seeded Tonganoxie.

Eudora’s Rod Evinger and Kent Swanson combined for the victory. Swanson was able to wiggle out of a bases-loaded, no-out jam in the fifth when Tonganoxie failed to execute a suicide squeeze. The next two batters were retired on a strikeout and groundout.

Tongie’s John Volk had 10 strikeouts in the setback.

“He was good on the mound, and we were bad at the plate. Usually that’s a bad combination,” Eudora coach Dirk Kinney said. “I’m pleased we were able to take advantage of their mistakes (four errors).”
