Osterman pitches UT to Big 12 softball title

? Cat Osterman pitched a one-hit shutout, and Monica Askew had a two-run single in the fifth inning as Texas beat Missouri, 2-0, Saturday to win the Big 12 Conference softball championship.

Osterman (24-6) struck out 16 Tigers and yielded only a triple to Micaela Minner leading off the fourth inning and two second-inning walks. The 6-foot-2 left-hander got out of the fourth by striking out Amanda Renth, Janessa Roening and Heather Kunkel — the Nos. 4, 5 and 6 batters in Missouri’s lineup — in order to preserve the shutout.

Osterman, who pitched for the U.S. Olympic softball team that won the gold medal last year, recorded her first seven outs by strikeout. She struck out the first five Missouri batters before walking Kunkel and Alyson Tobyne. After a double-steal, Osterman fanned Kendra Power to end the Tigers’ first threat. Sarah Stringer went down swinging to start the third before Leanne Bowers became the first Missouri player to put the ball in play.

Missouri starter Erin Kalka (10-6) matched Osterman for four innings, but stumbled in the fifth. She allowed a pair of singles and the runners moved up on a passed ball by Tobyne. Kalka recovered to strike out Amber Hall for the second out, but Askew singled up the middle to give the Longhorns (42-11) the only runs they’d need for their fourth Big 12 title.

It was the seventh one-hitter this season for Osterman, who also has thrown two perfect games, two other no-hitters, and 10 two-hitters.

The Texas softball team holds up the trophy after winning the Big 12 Conference tournament. UT beat Missouri, 2-0, in Saturday's championship game in Oklahoma City.

Kalka allowed two runs — one earned — in five innings with four hits and no walks.

Missouri was playing its third game of the day after needing back-to-back victories — including one in extra innings — to eliminate fourth-seeded Baylor and advance to the title game.
