KU snares two 2nds at league

? Kansas University senior Sondra Rauterkus placed second in the high jump at Saturday’s Big 12 Conference Outdoor track and field championships at R.V. Christian Track Complex.

Rauterkus cleared 5-83/4, same height as winner Anna Magle of Colorado, who won in the jump-off tiebreaker.

KU’s Charisse Bacchus placed fourth in the long jump in 21-01/2, helping the KU women to a third-place standing entering today’s final day of competition, which includes most of the finals on the track. Bacchus’ leap was third best in school history and a personal best.

Nebraska has 45.66 points, followed by Texas A&M (32), KU (29), Texas Tech (27), K-State (26), Colorado (25), Oklahoma State (25), Baylor (20), Texas (20), Iowa State (11), Missouri (11) and Oklahoma (1.33).

Shatoya Hill of KU placed eighth in the long jump in a personal best 19-63/4, while Bacchus was 10th in the heptathlon.

KU’s Sheldon Battle placed second in the shot put with a put of 63-101/2. Texas’ Brian Robison won in 64-73/4. Oklahoma basketball standout Kevin Bookout was fifth at 59-23/4.

Just a day after winning the hammer on his last throw, Battle took the lead in the shot on his final attempt. However, Robison stepped up with his best toss of the day to win the competition.

Battle’s effort, combined with a sixth-place finish by KU’s Barrett Saunders in the long jump (24-51/2) helped KU to a third-place standing entering the final day. NU leads with 49 points, followed by KSU (36), KU (31), A&M (30.5), UT (30), MU (28), ISU (24), TT (19.5), OU (13) and CU (12).

Jeremy Mims dominated the preliminaries with a 1:50.48 effort in the 800. Cameron Schwehr finished fourth in the 1,500 prelims in a season-best 3:48.03.

Brooklyn Hann placed eighth in the 100 hurdles preliminaries in 13.71. Freshman Ashley Brown just missed the finals, placing ninth in 13.82.

Kim Clark was eighth in the 800 prelims in 2:10.01. Julius Jiles placed second in the 400 hurdles prelims and sixth in the 110 hurdles prelims in a season-best 13.91. Janiece Gatson also will advance in the 400-meter hurdles with a mark of 1:01.26, good for sixth.
