Jayhawks tapped by Big 12 Conference

Kansas University softball shortstop Destiny Frankenstein and baseball relief pitcher Don Czyz have earned Big 12 Conference honors.

Frankenstein, a junior from Broken Arrow, Okla., has been named softball player of the week after leading the Jayhawks to a sweep over Iowa State by going 6-for-10 at the plate with two doubles and a home run, her record-setting 13th of the season.

Kansas (30-20) is the No. 6 seed in the Big 12 Tournament and will meet No. 3 seed Texas in a first-round game at 11 a.m. Thursday in Oklahoma City.

Czyz, a junior right-hander from Overland Park, has been named co-pitcher of the week.

He recorded saves in three of the Jayhawks’ four wins, including two against No. 2-ranked Texas. He began the week by pitching a perfect ninth inning to close a 5-3 win at Wichita State.

Overall, Czyz pitched 41/3 innings, did not allow a run, yielded two hits, struck out two and walked one batter.
