Oklahoman missing in Jefferson County

Oskaloosa — Jefferson County Sheriff’s officers were searching Monday for a 62-year-old man whose car was found abandoned Sunday evening in a remote area near Perry Lake.

Leslie Carroll Bentley was said by relatives to be in bad health and was last seen Thursday morning when he left to return to his home in Oklahoma, said Sheriff Roy Dunnaway.

There was no reason to suspect foul play, Dunnaway said.

The search included the Army Corps of Engineers, the Kansas Highway Patrol and its helicopter, and the Fairview and Ozawkie fire departments.

Bentley is a white man, 5 feet 10 inches tall. He has brown hair, hazel eyes and a mustache. He wears glasses and shuffles his feet when he walks. Anyone with information about his whereabouts should call (785) 863-2351.

Evolution hearings

ABC program features Bishop Seabury class

Bishop Seabury Academy students appeared on ABC’s “Nightline” news program Monday night.

“Nightline” crews observed a class and interviewed several students Friday for a program about the Kansas State Board of Education’s evolution hearings.

Several students who attended the hearings have been interviewed by media outlets, said Christopher Carter, headmaster at Bishop Seabury, 4120 Clinton Parkway.

Carter said he was proud of the students, who had a chance to share what they knew about the issue.

“It was nice for (the students) to know that people were interested in their thoughts,” he said.

Bridge replacements

County Commission OKs road project list

Douglas County commissioners Monday approved submitting a five-year plan for road projects in the county to the Kansas Department of Transportation.

Projects on the list can change, said Keith Browning, county public works director and engineer. “But the first two on the list are pretty much in place,” he said.

The projects in the order they appear on the list are:

  • replacing a bridge along County Road 1055 about 3/4 mile south of County Road 458;
  • replacing a bridge along County Road 442 just west of the Johnson County line;
  • replacing a bridge along County Road 1023 just south of County Road 460;
  • and replacing a bridge along County Road 1057 over the Wakarusa River half a mile south of Kansas Highway 10.
