Slight chance for thunderstorms today

Today Lawrence’s skies will be partly cloudy and there’s a slight chance for thunderstorms. But the city will get to enjoy some warm temperatures, says Tim Reith, 6News meteorologist.

“It looks to be a beautiful day,” Reith said. “The only things I think we’re going to have to worry about are some gusty winds as we go through the day.”

At 8:30 a.m., skies were mostly cloudy, the temperature was 57 degrees and winds were from the southeast at 8 mph The wind chill was 55 degrees.

“We’ll see some sunshine, some clouds and then the slight chance for a thunderstorm this afternoon,” Reith said. However, most of the thunderstorm activity will be along the Kansas-Nebraska border, he said.

“We just have the outside chance of one drifting through our area,” he said.

Today’s high temperature will be 77 degrees, with winds out of the southeast, gusting as high as 25 mph, he said.

Tonight, the temperature will drop to 55, with skies clearing out by early Saturday morning.

The clear skies will help the temperature climb to a high of 81 degrees by late Saturday afternoon. But clouds will begin redeveloping in the afternoon, leading to a chance of showers and thunderstorms late Saturday afternoon and Saturday evening, he said.

On Sunday, the temperatures will start out at 58 degrees and rise to a high of 78 by late afternoon, with cloudy skies, he said.

“For Mother’s Day we have a good chance of seeing some rainfall,” he said.
