Closure

Officials shouldn't hesitate to pursue and prosecute any additional suspects in the Oklahoma City terrorist blast that killed 168 people.

The recent 10th anniversary of the Oklahoma City bombing that killed 168, including 19 children, should stir in our souls a renewed dedication to bring to justice anyone who had anything to do with this tragedy, the worst incident of domestic terrorism in American history. The case may not be closed yet.

Perpetrator Timothy McVeigh has been executed, and conspirator Terry Nichols is in prison. Whether he is trying to lighten his conscience remains to be seen, but Nichols now contends that an Arkansas gun collector provided additional bomb components recently found in Nichols’ former Herington, Kan., home. Officials should use every means to determine whether the Arkansas man had anything to do with the incident that affected thousands of lives and bring him to justice.

Reportedly, authorities took a hard look at the Arkansas man in the early stages of the bombing probe. He was known for his anti-government views and his close ties to McVeigh. He never was charged.

Nichols wrote a letter recently to a woman who lost two grandchildren in the blast. He said he wanted to speak out because “I felt the record should be set straight.” Nichols says FBI tests of bomb components found about a month ago in his home in Herington will support his claim they came from the Arkansas collector and from the man’s girlfriend.

The FBI and other law enforcement people reportedly are checking carefully on the material, and some new charges could be filed. They shouldn’t hesitate if what Nichols says is true.

Nichols has been convicted twice — in federal court and in an Oklahoma state court — and is currently serving two life sentences without parole. He could be jockeying for some kind of leniency in his case or he may want to come clean and clear up questions about the bombing and who was involved. Maybe this information will provide some closure on this horrible tragedy. If the gun collector and his woman friend had anything at all to do with the Oklahoma City holocaust, they should be prosecuted and shoved behind bars with Nichols as soon as possible.
