New blue uniforms in works

It’s official: The navy-blue Kansas University football uniforms will be put to rest after just a three-season tenure.

The KU athletic department previously was unsure if the Jayhawk football team would be able to get uniforms with the new university-standard blue in time for the season opener on Sept. 3.

But associate athletic director Jim Marchiony confirmed the new school-wide color — and new contract with Adidas — would mean new football uniforms would be made in time for the 2005 season. The gear is being designed now.

“We’re in the process of doing that with Adidas right now,” Marchiony said. “I don’t expect the design to be much different than it is now.”

Consistent with the new “Kansas blue” adopted by the university in February, the football uniforms will be significantly lighter than the navy blue used during coach Mark Mangino’s first three years at KU, but a bit darker than the royal blue used during the Terry Allen years.

“It’s kind of a midway between navy and royal,” Marchiony said. “It leans a little bit toward royal, but it’s not a real royal blue. It’s Kansas blue.”

Another 2006 commitment: Kansas has landed its second commitment for 2006 — again from Wilmer Hutchins High in Dallas.

Cornerback Anthony Webb gave his nonbinding oral commitment to Kansas this week, according to rivals.com. Webb, a 6-foot-1, 190-pound cornerback, joins high school classmate Xavier Rambo in committing to KU.

Webb had received early offers from KU and Missouri and interest from Texas, Florida and Wisconsin. Because he’s just a junior, he won’t sign his letter of intent until February.

Punter signs: Former KU punter Curtis Ansel is getting another shot at the NFL.

Ansel signed a free-agent contract with the Houston Texans this week, the second team he has signed with since his last season at KU in 2003.

Ansel (6-foot, 210 pounds) signed as an undrafted rookie free agent with Detroit a year ago, but was released after training camp. At Kansas, he averaged 41.2 yards per punt his senior year.

Top 100: ESPN.com recently listed the top 100 “Hot List” college football players, a compilation of the biggest impact players for 2005.

KU linebacker Nick Reid came in at number 100, and ESPN said that Reid was the “best bet to lead the Big 12 in tackles.”

No other Jayhawks made the cut. Other names of interest include Southern California’s Reggie Bush (No. 1), Oklahoma running back Adrian Peterson (No. 4), Texas quarterback Vince Young (No. 15) and Texas A&M quarterback Reggie McNeal (No. 21).
