Girls getting ready to dress up again

Lawrence High School junior Laura Parkinson models a floral skirt and low-heeled sandals, both popular choices for teens this spring.

Spring is in the air, so put the spring back in your step with these lighthearted fashion trends. Each is easy, cute and can fit all body types. The most important factor is comfort, and the look is designed to make a person comfortable while still allowing them to bring out their inner diva or rock star. From the bottom to the top, fashion does not have to be intimidating.

The shoes hitting the pavement this season are colorful, slip-on flats. Feet need love, too: Find a bright interesting color or pattern to give them a little necessary attention. They can be matched to any outfit or not. Either will look fresh, cute and fun.

Skirts lengths: Thank goodness they’ve moved from “barely there” to just at the knee. This means all body types can find the perfect skirt. Pleats add body and give a retro, sporty look. Bright floral patterns also can be seen. Pair with a cute cardigan and some ballet flats to complete the preppy look. Shorts lengths also have moved down to midthigh. They look great with a tank top to not reveal too much skin.

Lawrence Catholic School sixth-grader Victoria Gilman wears a bright green tank with multicolored bracelets during her visit to South Park.

Find some professional-looking cropped pants or capris. Cute ones come below the knee and are straight in the leg. They can make a person’s legs look a mile long. Also, find ones that fit well, especially in the seat. They are a staple in anyone’s new spring wardrobe.

Now that the bottom is taken care of, the top needs equal attention. If the budget is low this year, find an old T-shirt, fabric spray paint and stencils in a favorite word or name. Next, spray the stencils on and for a funky band look, spray around them to get the box around the letter. If that does not suit any crafty person, use fabric paint to create a sunrise or a beach scene. Bows or buttons also can be sewn on. The unique look will keep people wondering, “Where did you get that?”

Lawrence High School juniors Laura Parkinson and Scott Simmons go for sophisticated looks, all the more appropriate as they head into their senior year.

Ever heard of seersucker? According to the dictionary, it is a light thin fabric, generally cotton or rayon, with a crinkled surface and a usually striped pattern. It is really cute to wear in a jacket or in a pair of capris. It is a timeless fashion trend that can be found in stores for a good price in pastel colors.

Stand out with these new colors: Turquoise and blues are particularly “in” this season. Move away from neon colors such as bright pink and green. Instead, find clothes in colors such as coral or lime green. Make sure to have bright colored T-shirts that can go with about anything. Be prepared for any new style with a few basic classics; they are worth the investment.
