Homers plentiful for KU

Jayhawks rout Tech, win eighth straight

? Kansas University’s softball squad pasted four home runs Sunday in a 10-0 rout of Texas Tech at Rocky Johnson Field — the Jayhawks’ eighth straight victory.

Junior shortstop Destiny Frankenstein set a single-season KU record with her 13th home run, and junior third baseman Nettie Fierros blasted two homers for the Jayhawks, who improved to 28-19 overall and 7-7 in the Big 12 Conference.

Leading 1-0 in the top of the fourth inning, freshman catcher Elle Pottorf sent a shot over the left-field wall, scoring Fierros, who had reached on a fielder’s choice.

Frankenstein and Fierros homered in the top of the sixth, and KU grabbed a 5-0 lead. But Tech tried to rally in the bottom half, loading the bases against KU sophomore pitcher Kassie Humphreys. But junior Serena Settlemier, the hero of Saturday’s victory, relieved Humphreys and retired the side to squash the rally.

The floodgates opened for KU in the seventh. Fierros’ second homer, a three-run shot, capped the five-run frame and gave the Jayhawks the final 10-0 margin.

Humphreys (5-6) allowed just two hits and struck out three in four innings, earning her first Big 12 victory.

KU will conclude its home season at 4 p.m. Wednesday with a Border Showdown battle against Missouri at Arrocha Ballpark. The Jayhawks then will travel Saturday and Sunday to Ames, Iowa, for two final regular-season games against Iowa State before the Big 12 Tournament on May 11-14.
