Robbery suspect arrested after tip

Police officer approached by citizen with information leading to an arrest

A Lawrence Police officer operating a radar gun Saturday morning received a tip that led to the arrest of a man suspected of robbing a convenience store several hours earlier.

Shortly after 10 a.m. officers went to a residence in the 1500 block of West 22nd Terrace and arrested without incident Dequanus Treyon Wilson, 28, Lawrence, Police Capt. Dan Affalter said. Wilson listed his address as the Salvation Army shelter, 946 N.H.

Wilson was taken to the Douglas County Jail where he was booked on suspicion of aggravated robbery, Affalter said. A formal charge is pending.

Wilson is suspected of robbing the Kwik Shop, 1724 W. 23rd St., police said in a news release.

Police responded to a report of the robbery at 2:37 a.m. Saturday. A store clerk told police that a man entered the store and approached the counter while he was outside emptying trash cans. The clerk walked back to the counter to help the man, who pulled the hood of his sweatshirt over his head and a handgun out of his waistband. The gunman then ordered the clerk to turn over money in the cash register and the clerk complied.

The suspect fled the store on foot. He was described by the clerk as a black man between 20 and 30 years old who was wearing a blue hooded sweat shirt, dark blue jeans and a blue bandanna over his face.

About 9:45 a.m. an officer was operating a radar in the area of 23rd Street and Ousdahl Road and was approached by a civilian who had information about the robbery suspect, Affalter said.

The tipster was given a Gun Stoppers Award of $100 in cash. The Gun Stoppers program pays the cash for information leading to the recovery of an illegal firearm or one used in a weapons violation, Affalter said. Anyone with similar information can call police at 785-832-7509 or 785-843-TIPS.
